Starting Your First SIP in India: A Zero-Jargon Step-by-Step Checklist

## Starting Your First SIP in India: A Zero-Jargon Step-by-Step Checklist

You do not need to time the market or decode candlestick charts. If you take home a salary in India and can spare even ₹500 after rent and groceries, you already have what SIP investing asks of you: a date, an amount, and the patience to let the rest run on its own.

A Systematic Investment Plan is a standing order. A fixed sum leaves your bank on a day you pick, and a mutual fund in India buys units for you. Over years, rupee cost averaging means you buy more units when prices fall and fewer when they rise, so you stop hunting for a perfect entry. The money you set aside this month will still be working long after you forget the day you started. That quiet compounding is the point of financial planning for a salaried investor.

TortoiseSIP exists for people who want that habit without the noise. We are a Mutual Fund Distributor partnered with Rupeezy. You launch a goal-based, set-and-forget SIP in under 10 minutes, tied to a house down payment, a wedding fund, or an international trip, not to an abstract return number.

What to keep on your desk

Before you tap anything, gather your PAN card, Aadhaar with the mobile number already linked, the bank account that receives your salary, and one concrete goal, even if it is still fuzzy.

KYC is a one-time identity check through a SEBI-registered KRA. You do it once, then it works across platforms. dealplexus.com puts a first SIP at about 30 minutes after KYC. assetorbit.in says the whole flow can finish in under 15 minutes once documents are ready. On Rupeezy, the partner we use, the path is PAN, Aadhaar, online KYC, then the fund page.

Your 7-step checklist 📋

1. Name the goal, not a percentage. Write down why the money exists: emergency buffer, child's education, retirement, a wedding. Tenure follows the goal. rupeezy.in uses three filters: objective, tenure, and how much monthly cash you can lose sleep over. That last item is your risk appetite in plain language.

2. Finish KYC. Use PAN plus Aadhaar e-KYC with OTP.

3. Start through TortoiseSIP, not a spreadsheet. Open TortoiseSIP, follow the Rupeezy partner flow, search the scheme, and tap Start SIP. Rupeezy's help page at support.rupeezy.in walks through amount, date, frequency, first payment, and AutoPay in that order.

4. Match the fund to the clock. If you have no favourite manager, a Nifty 50 index fund is the cleanest start. It tracks India's 50 largest listed companies, typically at an expense ratio around 0.2% to 0.3%. assetorbit.in makes that case plainly. Use this map if you want a tighter fit:

Your goal and horizon Fund type to consider
3-5 years (near-term goal) Balanced Advantage or Conservative Hybrid
5-7 years (medium-term) Large-cap or Flexi-cap
7-10+ years (retirement, long wealth creation) Nifty 50 index fund, Flexi-cap, or Large and Mid-cap mix
Tax-saving with a 3-year lock-in ELSS (Section 80C under the old tax regime)

Do not chase last year's top performer. Choose the Growth option so returns stay invested, then move on.

5. Set an amount you will not miss. Standard minimums run from ₹3000 to ₹5000 a month, depending on the fund. rivo.pe walks through a ₹5000 start. forbesindia.com notes some schemes accept ₹100. Start smaller than your pride wants. Consistency beats a heroic first debit that bounces.

6. Pick a date 2-3 days after salary credit. This is the unglamorous trick that keeps SIPs alive. indwallet.com stresses the same buffer so auto-debit never fails. Monthly is the default for a salaried investor. Weekly or quarterly exists if your cash flow is lumpy.

7. Authorise auto-debit, then stop tinkering. Pay the first instalment by UPI, net banking, or NEFT. Approve UPI AutoPay or a NACH e-mandate so later months pull automatically. dealplexus.com explains an e-mandate as standing permission for the fund to debit your account on a fixed date. You do not log in each month. If a new fund house is involved, allow 7-10 days for processing, as honestmoney.in flags. Once income rises, switch on a step-up SIP so the instalment grows without another round of paperwork.

Keep these three checks in your pocket

Tenure matters. A 3-year SIP and a 15-year SIP are different animals. Equity-heavy funds need time to ride out swings. Short goals belong in milder hybrids. Ask how much of this month's debit you could watch fall in value without panic-selling. If the honest answer is very little, stay closer to conservative hybrids until your horizon lengthens.

India's SIP inflows crossed ₹30,954 crore a month as of May 2026, according to AMFI figures reported by dealplexus.com. Retail India is already putting salary on autopilot. The bigger risk for a beginner is not picking the wrong Nifty 50 fund. It is another year of cash sitting idle while inflation works against you.

FAQ

How long until my first SIP is live? KYC can take minutes. The first debit often happens the day you start. Later instalments run on your chosen date. A new fund house can take 7-10 days to process.

Do I need a demat account? Not strictly for mutual fund SIPs. Many people start with PAN, Aadhaar, and a bank mandate. If you already have demat, you can still run SIPs from there.

Can I pause or raise the amount later? Yes. On Rupeezy you can modify, pause, or delete a SIP, and you can add Automatic Step-up as income grows.

Is this a way to get rich quickly? No. SIP investing is a discipline, not a shortcut. Units fluctuate. Stay invested for the goal's full tenure.

Start the habit this week 🐢

Open TortoiseSIP, set one goal, and let the Rupeezy partner link carry you through KYC, fund choice, and AutoPay. Ten minutes now is how a salaried investor turns month-end anxiety into a financial safety net that runs while you work. Want more of our guides in one place? The sitemap lists them.
